Final Capstone Project

"Whistler" was my final capstone project for Nashville Software School. It utilizes HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and React.js on the client side, and Python, Django, and SQL on the server side. Both front-end and back-end are deployed to Heroku, so you can try out the app there, or visit to view the code.

Who I am

Full-stack developer in Greater Nashville

I am a retired United States Air Force Chaplain. I proudly served alongside our nation's sons and daughters in all branches of the armed forces for 23 years, 12 assignments in 11 states and 4 foreign countries including 3 deployments. Now I am beginning a new adventure as a full-stack web developer.

During my time in the Air Force, one of my most unique assignments was one-year as a graduate student at Auburn University where I earned a Master of Science in Information Technology. I was introduced to network security and began entry level coding in HTML, CSS, Visual Basic, Java, JSP, and XML. It was love at first byte!

I continued to dabble in web-development, creating sites for family, friends, and some not-for-profit organizations over the years, but I was hungry for more. When I finally stepped down from the Air Force, I began looking for a way to quickly get back into coding.

Nashville Software School provided a robust six-month, accelerated full-stack software development bootcamp in a simulated agile work environment. NSS gave me the opportunity to learn by doing. I collaborated with coworkers in pair programming and larger teams to develop web apps in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, React, SQl, Python, Django and more.

I love the challenges, the opportunity to create something new or continue to make improvements where others have already begun, to solve problems and puzzles coding presents. I hope to continue to sharpen my skills and become the best developer I can be, and to make a positive difference for others along the way!

Oh, and I am a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan -- especially this year! As I begin a new adventure in web development, I am thrilled to see players like Yadi, Wainwright, and Pujols still bringing strength to the game and shaping the next generation as only seasoned veterans can.

What I do

Front-end

The front-end is everything the user sees and interacts with. My goal is to develop apps and websites that offer smooth, "frictionless" user experiences -- products that are intuitive and easy to use, with clean, modern, and eye-catching design.

Back-end

Everything the user sees on the frontend is generated through scripts running on a web server on the backend. I utilize server-side languages to write clean, secure applications to interact with databases and provide data connection with an application programming interface (API).

CMS

Content Management Systems allow you to get online with an SEO friendly, professionally designed site in half the time. That's why nearly 36% of sites on the internet today are WordPress sites, and why Joomla! and Drupal account for over 2 million live sites. Let's talk about how a CMS might be your best solution.
